This song was originally written in January of 2018, and was inspired by a video from the 30th anniversary convention for "Star Trek: The Next Generation". During the convention, Whoopi Goldberg was asked about the relationship between her character and the Borg, and after explaining why she couldn't offer a good answer to the question, she explained why she often thought about the Borg. "The Borg represent what it looks like when w e lose our humanity, and I often wonder what the Borg would look like today," she added. This son is an exploration of that statement, and an homage to Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better future.
lyrics
"There was a time before they came
Before our thoughts were all the same
We had so many wonders, so many dreams
They've been taken away now, so it seems
I'm not me, and you're not you
There's a single voice telling us what to do
What to think, who we should be
You're not you and I'm not me
We're the Borg, 21st Century Borg, 21st Century Borg
They're in my head, they're in my soul
Trying to turn me into another thrall
I want to cry, I want to laugh
These are things that a drone can't have
I'm not me, and you're not you
There's a single voice telling us what to do
What to think, who we should be
You're not you and I'm not me
We're the Borg, 21st Century Borg, 21st Century Borg
We are more than Borg, so much more than the Borg
[Monologue: We are individuals, and you shall not assimilate our biological and technological distinctiveness into your own. For we have the human compulsion, the desire that drives us to grow, to become more than we are today. It is why we have come so far, exploring our lives as we reach out to the stars. It is why we are here, not to conquer with weapons or ideas, but to learn, to coexist. So to all of you 21st Century Borg, to you I say ...]
Assimilate this
Assimilate this
You 21st Century Borg
You 21st Century Borg
Assimilate this
There's a place, they can't touch
This dream of ours is just too much
Assimilate this
Hope for the future, for you, for me
For the day when we don't have to be
The Borg, 21st Century Borg, 21st Century Borg
Assimilate This
Assimilate This
You 21st Century Borg."
